Wilmington's Cape Fear Coast -- dubbed "Hollywood East," thanks to more than 400 filming projects including Dawson's Creek -- is also a haven for antiques, vintage clothing, and one-of-a-kinds. Historic downtown Wilmington's Cotton Exchange, within eight buildings erected during the 1900s, hosts specialty retailers such as Cape Fear Footwear, Caravan Beads, Keen Interiors, T.S. Brown Jewelry, and Candy Barrel. Cotton Exchange eateries include the German Café, Deli Downtown, The Scoop for ice cream and sandwiches, and Paddy's Hollow, a Victorian pub. In what's known as the South College Road and Monkey Junction Area, Fountaine Bridal ranks as Wilmington's oldest such shop, also handling prom attire and other gowns for sizes 2 to 28. Also on College Road, Pine Valley Market stocks butcher shop and gourmet delights. The Forum, on Military Cut-off Road, features upscale shops including Peanut Butter & Jelly for kids, Tara Grinna Swimwear, and Ikebana Design for floral arrangements and gifts.
Mayfaire Town Center, near Eastwood Road and Military Cut-off, features assorted goods and services including Ann Taylor, Pier 1, Sharper Image, and After Hours Formal Wear, plus a 16-screen cinema. On Oleander Drive, Westfield Shoppingtown Independence Mall -- a mouthful that most locals call The Mall -- is anchored by Belk, Dillard's, JCPenney, and Sears, and features some 150 stores, more than a dozen eateries, and a 400-seat food court. On Eastwood Road, Lumina Station boasts more than two dozen shops, fining dining, and personal service boutiques including Alligator Pie for small fry apparel, Monkee's for finer footwear, Blush for trendy cosmetics, and Airlie Moon for home décor and eclectic gifts. On South College Road, Mill Outlet Village serves dressy fabric, upholstery, and accessory needs. Hamlet's Christian Closet Inc. near Wilmington, buys, sells, and trades vintage clothing by appointment, as does A Little Bit Happy on Nutt Street, and Front Street's Flashbax, filled with 40's, 50's and 60's looks.
